NBC is looking to crank up the heat with its summer offerings, promising eight new eclectic shows.

Slated for a two-hour premiere, "I'm A Celebrity…, Get Me Out Of Here" (Monday, June 1) is billed as a "groundbreaking, live event."  The celebrities will be dropped out of a plane into the Costa Rican jungle and instructed by the American viewing public to complete various challenges and duties in order to win food and other necessities.

The celebrity line-up this season includes model/reality-show veteran Janice Dickinson, the youngest Baldwin brother Stephen, American "Idol" Sanjaya, former Detroit Piston Bad Boy John Salley, "The Hills" newlywed couple Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt, and wrestler Torrie Wilson (pictured to the right).

Leaving the no-talents behind, "America's Got Talent" (Tuesday, June 23) is back for its fourth season. The show touts itself as a "true celebration of the American spirit" and features performers with a variety of talents. The trio of celeb judges are back - David Hasselhoff, Sharon Osbourne, and Piers Morgan along with newbie host and Mr. Mariah Carey, Nick Cannon, and uber-producer Simon Cowell.  They are all hoping to piggyback on the global overnight sensation Susan Boyle. "Has America got its answer to Susan Boyle?" Morgan quipped at the recent Press Day.  "I mean a talent that comes out of nowhere and really stuns and amazes Americans."

NBC's third and final summertime reality series is a new one called "Great American Road Trip" (Wednesday, July 1). Seven families from diverse backgrounds will travel across the country RV-style. Competing in a myriad of challenges set against national landmarks and oddities like the Grand Canyon, Washington Monument, and the World's Largest Chair, one family will be eliminated each week based on their performance in these challenges.

NBC is debuting three 13-episode dramas in June, "The Listener" catches the first wave when it premieres Thursday, June 4.  The supernatural drama features young paramedic/crime solver Toby Logan, played by Canadian actor Craig Olejnik, who has a power to listen to people's most intimate thoughts.  The mid-20's urbanite will try to balance his power with his 'normal' life.

A few weeks later, hoping for some Summer magic, NBC will introduce "Merlin" on Sunday, June 21.  This fantasy-drama series updates the story of the infamous sorcerer of Arthurian legend, chronicling the lusty and youthful adventures of Merlin and Prince Arthur.  This series, which first aired on the BBC last Fall, stars Colin Morgan and Bradley James.

For those worried about foreclosures, "The Philanthropist" may raise your spirits when it premieres on June 24. James Purefoy ("Rome") stars as Teddy Rist, a billionaire playboy who, after rescuing a young boy during a hurricane, becomes the world's first vigilante philanthropist by channelling his power and money into helping those in need. Others signed onto the heroic drama are Jesse L. Martin ("Law & Order"), Neve Campbell ("Party of Five"), Krista Allen ("The Starter Wife") and Michael Kenneth Williams ("The Wire").

To end the Summer, NBC is using overworked concepts for their two natural-disaster miniseries. While you might think you're watching summer reruns, you're not. They are, in fact, brand-new miniseries, but we've already had "Asteroid", "Storm", "Category 6: Day of Destruction", "Category 7: The End of the World", "The Doomsday Rock", "Meteorites", "Polar Storm", …

"Meteor" (July 12 & 19) stars Christopher Lloyd ("Taxi"), Marla Sokoloff ("The Practice"), Stacy Keach ("Prison Break"), Jason Alexander ("Seinfeld"), and Billy Campbell ("Once and Again") as scientists, the military and local authorities race against time to avert the impending disaster of the approaching meteor.

If you survive that disaster, maybe you'll survive this one as well. Treat Williams ("Everwood"), David James Elliot ("JAG"), James Van Der Beek ("Dawson's Creek"), John Laroquette ("Night Court"), Teri Polo ("I'm with Her") and Luke Perry ("Beverly Hills, 90210") star in "The Storm" (July 26 & August 2). Williams portrays Robert Terrell, a billionaire who creates history-making weather technology that eventually goes awry, resulting in global catastrophic storms. Elliot, who apparently got promoted from naval JAG lawyer to Joint Chief of Staff, helps Terrell's maniacal business aspirations, as a scientist and reporter race against time to shut down the system and avert impending disaster.
