TV Tango's Exclusive Interview with Sophie and Katherine

Question: Do you have plans for a cookbook?

Sophie & Katherine: Yes, we're in the process of writing the cookbook now. It'll include stories and recipes from our childhood, and also from DC CUPCAKES, Georgetown Cupcake, and new recipes. I don't know the exact date, but it will be sometime just before Christmas.

[According to Amazon, their book, "The Cupcake Diaries: Stories, Memories, and Recipes from the Sisters of Georgetown Cupcake," will be released in November 2011, and you can pre-order the book here.]

Question: What new flavor cupcake did you create in the last month that won't be on TV?

Sophie & Katherine: Strawberry marble-fudge chocolate cupcake. It's a chocolate cupcake with strawberry buttercream frosting.

Question: What was the most difficult event -- on or off the show -- that you had to cater so far?

Sophie & Katherine: In Season 2 of DC CUPCAKES, creating the bridal gown made of cupcakes for DC Fashion Week.

[SPOILER ALERT: They had to start it from scratch on the day of the event.]

Question: How has life changed following the success of the first season?

Sophie & Katherine: It hasn't really changed that much except we get more email and letters from women who have been inspired to open their own businesses. We understand because many of them were very scared to open their own businesses -- as we were -- but we're very glad we did.

We see ourselves as bakers, not stars, but we do get recognized. Believe it or not, our mom gets recognized more frequently. People have rolled down their windows, screaming "Mommy, I love you!" [both laughing]

Question: Do a significant number of tourists come to your bakery because they saw you on TV?

Sophie & Katherine: We totally do, and it's so awesome. We want to give them the best experience. It's a bonding thing with our audience. We love the fact that they go to the monuments -- the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument -- and then stop by us. It's very heartwarming.

Question: What was your favorite episode from Season 1?

Sophie: Making the coconut dog for the Washington Rescue Animal League. It was so much fun because the guests thought it was a real dog.

Katherine: I loved the firehouse bakeoff. It was great for me. I loved being with all those firehouse guys. The best thing was that Sophie got no votes, and I won. As sisters, we're very competitive. We often have bakeoffs with the staff and have them vote by secret ballot to see who wins.

Question: If TLC gave you the chance, what one or two scenes would you like to remove from reruns of Season 1?

Sophie & Katherine: Nothing. It's a reality show and that's our reality.

Question: What kind of promotion are you doing for Season 2? Something besides your secret flavor of the day on Twitter?

Sophie & Katherine: We're giving one free cupcake per person all day long on Friday, February 25, 2011 at Georgetown Cupcake. We'll bake a new batch [of cupcakes] every 15 minutes so we won't run out. We don't know how many people are going to line up.

[You should check the Georgetown Cupcake Twitter feed and Facebook wall for new ways to enjoy free cupcakes. The girls are always running new contests and giveaways.]

Question: During what months did you shoot Season 2?

Sophie & Katherine: September 2010 through January 2011.

Question: Was it easier or more difficult to shoot the second time?

Sophie & Katherine: It was much easier this time. We had so much fun filming because we were used to having the crew around. We knew how long it would take to set up, and we knew the filming schedule. The crew has become our family.

Question: In Season 2, you made cupcakes for the military. Can you tell us about that experience?

Sophie & Katherine: It's our all-time favorite episode. We baked cupcakes at the Pentagon kitchen with the Pentagon chef, and the Chairman Joint Chief of Staff's wife chose the winning flavor. They sent an assortment of cupcake flavors -- but predominantly the winning flavor -- since they weren't sure everybody would like it. Cupcakes were sent to numerous bases in Afghanistan and Iraq, and they even made it to the front-line fighters. We got a lot of emails and letters from the troops.

[The girls wouldn't tell us which flavor won, but they did tell us that the winning cupcakes had fondant US flags on them.]

We not only helped bake them, but we helped load them on the cargo plane too. It was very emotional for us. We have a lot of friends and family in the military and we have to give back for what they do. It's very little to pay for what they do for us. We make as many donations as we can afford.

[In case you were wondering, your tax money didn't pay for any cupcakes. Sophie & Katherine paid for all goods.]

Question: How did you get involved with Breast Cancer Awareness Month?

Katherine: In 2009 we ran the Race for the Cure, and it was very emotional for us. We were blown away at the number of people that showed up. We wanted to do something bigger, and we got in touch with the Susan G. Komen Foundation, which really resonated with us. There were others to choose from, but with Sophie and I being sisters and most of our staff bakers being women, we thought this was the right charity for us. So we decided to sell pink ribbon cupcakes, and 100% of the proceeds over a six-month period went directly to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. We raised $50,000.

Question: When you made cupcakes for the gorilla birthday party in Season 2, what did you make for the gorillas?

Sophie & Katherine: The cupcakes for the gorillas were prepared for the zoo by their dieticians. The gorillas are on a very strict diet. Even though their cupcakes look like red velvet, they really were gorilla food.

[We asked the girls what was in the gorillas' cupcakes, but they didn't know since they didn't work directly with the zoo dieticians. Fortunately, the National Zoo reported the details: "These ape cupcakes were made from bananas, primate biscuits, unflavored gelatin, and water and resembled Georgetown Cupcake’s red velvet cupcakes."]

[The girls did this event to raise money for the the National Zoo's conservation programs. Sophie and Katherine will donate 100% of proceeds for every "Gone Bananas!" cupcake they sell at their Georgetown and Bethesda cupcake stores from February 18, 2011 to March 4, 2011. Plus, according to this press release from the National Zoo, Sophie and Katherine's Georgetown Cupcake "has been a participant of the Zoo's largest fundraising event, ZooFari, in the past and will be part of the 2011 ZooFari event to be held May 19 at the Zoo."]

Question: Did you attend DC Fashion Week before you shot there in Season 2? Was your cupcake wedding dress the most couture design there?

Katherine: No, that was our first time.

We were the only bridal gown in the show. The cupcakes were vanilla cupcakes with maple buttercream to give it a beige color. It weighed over 300 pounds. I can't tell you how it got down the catwalk, but after the show was over, Sophie and my mother put it on me, and the whole thing fell off me. It was so heavy.
