Plot Synopsis
Based on the novel by Ernest J. Gaines. In a small town in 1940s Louisiana a teacher in a one-room school for black kids is pushed by his Aunt's best friend to visit her godson, a young black man who sits on death row for a murder he did not commit. The teacher tries to impart courage and pride to the frightened boy before his execution. Forging a strong bond, the two men struggle to live and die with dignity.
